Hello members of DAWN Manitoba!
I am pleased to be writing you today with information about an exciting new SMD Self-Help Clearinghouse program that I will be coordinating, that will be available to your organization's members.
The Asset Building Program was developed by SEED Winnipeg to provide people the opportunity to learn money management skills and to learn to save. Over the six month program, participants will:
- Learn about creating budgets that work, smart shopping, dealing with banks and credit unions, credit and other topics, in a class with other people
- Create a saving plan for a particular item or items (must be a necessary "asset", like a computer, furniture, course fees, work clothing, disability related item – not something extra like a new TV. or something that would be used up immediately)
- Make deposits into a special account at Assiniboine Credit Union, to a maximum of $250.
- Be credited with $15 in matching funds for every $5 saved each month, to a maximum of $750.
Three conditions must be met:
- By the end of the six month program, there must have been deposits into a special Assiniboine Credit Union Account in each of at least four months within the six months of the program
- The participant must have attended all classes and completed all assignments
- The money deposited and credits must be used for the purchase of the item for which the saving plan was developed.
If the maximum amount has been saved, the amount available to purchase the asset would be $1,000.
Should the participant not be able to complete the program, the monies they have deposited will be returned to them, without the matching funds. Likewise, should it not be possible to save the necessary amount for the identified item, or if needs change, program participants can discuss other items with the coordinator.
We would appreciate your assistance in communicating this information with your members so that they can consider whether it is right for them. Participants can be any adult age, and have any source of income, with income limits based on family size. There is an intake process, and up to 15 people will be accepted. The program will begin mid January, so we are trying to have intakes done before the end of December.
Please call me at 975-3103 or at zjoyce@smd.mb.ca.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.
