Profiles of Women

Eileen O'Brien (Past Chairperson, DAWN Canada)

Susie Matthias

Eileen has been the Chairperson of DAWN Canada since 1994 and has spent her life as an activist for
social changes. In her early adult life she was awarded a fellowship with Frontier College of Toronto for her community development work in Northern communities.

Later on, her training as a registered nurse helped her move easily into the women's health movement. There she worked with women in a transition house and rape crisis centre and after that, with the Canadian Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Society.

Eileen's commitment as a woman with a disAbility to the empowerment of women with disAbilities within the women's and disability movements is lifelong and tireless and she takes great pride and joy in joining her sisters in this struggle.

Eileen is proud to be a mother of a daughter who is an active member of DAWN Canada.

Eileen resides in British Columbia.
