DAWN-RAFH Canada is a national organization controlled by and comprised of women who self-identify as Women with disAbilities. We are from all backgrounds and all disAbilities. We are a feminist organization working to achieve control over our lives and end the stereotype that labels us dependent burdens on society. Our Network began in 1985. Our Society Status was received in 1992.

WARMEST WISHES FOR INCREASING WEALTH!

Suze Orman Attached is a copy of Suze Orman's book, Women & Money. Oprah offered everyone a free copy. Make sure you pass this gift on to the women in your life. In this financial climate, we can all use some advice on getting and keeping our money straight. It is over 200+ pages so if you can't print it, you should be able to save to your computer and pull up whenever you want to. Enjoy and remember to pass it on! Click here to get it! (PDF format)

Suze Orman is a big advocate for the uplifting of women, so enjoy your upliftment!

"I pray that I may never meddle, interfere, dictate, give advice that is not wanted, or assist when my services are not needed. If I can help people, I'll do it by giving them a chance to help themselves; and if I can uplift and inspire, let it be by example, inference and suggestion, rather than by injunction and dictation. That is to say, I desire to be Radiant -- to Radiate Life!" ~Elbert Hubbard

"Travel, in the younger sort, is part of education; in the elder, a part of experience." ~Francis Bacon

"A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds." ~Francis Bacon

"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." ~Annie Dillard

Waves of Resistance

The Pan-Canadian Young Feminist Gathering "Waves of Resistance"

The Pan-Canadian Young Feminist Gathering Waves of Resistance was held from October 11 to 13, 2008, at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). The goal of the participants was to reaffirm the relevance of feminism and to work and discuss collectively about issues like intersectionality, the feminization of poverty, hypersexualization and racism. The number of participants who attended the event was impressive, as more than 500 women got together during this, the first pan-Canadian young feminist gathering! DAWN-RAFH Canada contributed to this event by mobilizing young feminists with disabilities from across Canada who also participated and contributed to the Waves of Resistance.

National Accommodation and Accessibility Survey (NAAS)

Disabled Women and Shelter Access: Early Findings of the National Accessibility and Accommodation Survey - Word format - PDF format

Has your shelter taken part in our survey? It's never too late
From Victoria, B.C., to Stephenville, Nfld., women’s shelters all over Canada are participating in the National Accessibility and Accommodation Survey (NAAS).

In less than two months, almost 50 shelters have completed the survey.  These participating shelters have come from all ten provinces, both rural and urban communities, and include native women's shelters.

Shelters or transition houses across Canada have been sent a survey to determine whether they are accessible to women with all types of disabilities. As shelters see on a daily basis, violence against women with disabilities is more frequent than violence against non-disabled women.

PROJECT UPDATE:

Phase I of the NAAS was completed in August 2008 and the results of the first phase of this National survey were presented by DAWN-RAFH Canada during the First World Conference of Women's Shelters in Edmonton, Sept. 8-11, 2008.

Moving forward with the NAAS. The challenges facing shelters in welcoming women with disAbilities are numerous and DAWN-RAFH Canada is keeping the NAAS open to all Shelters who wish to fill the survey. DAWN-RAFH Canada is making the NAAS a permanent programme as the survey represents an excellent tool for shelters in assessing their needs in regards to accessibility and accommodation of disAbled women.
Shelters across Canada are invited to contact us if they wish to use the NAAS for this purpose.
