Deleting Temporary Files - Windows 98

Windows 98 creates some files for its own use. When/if you shut down Windows for the day, it's supposed to delete those temporary files. Unfortunately, it sometimes forgets. After a while, the dead files pile up.

You'll need to purge those files yourself. To see what temporary trash Windows has stored permanently on your hard drive, follow these steps:

1. Select Start, Find, Files or Folders.

2. Type *.tmp into the Named box. That's an asterisk, a period, and the letters T, M, and P.

3. Click Find Now.

4. Look at the dates of the files that turn up. See any files that are older than a week or so? Copy them onto a floppy disk for protection, and then drag the files into the Recycle Bin.

To be on the safe side, don't ever delete any files with the current day's date. Wait a few days just to make sure that they don't contain anything important. And even then, make sure that you save a copy of the file on a floppy disk in case a program starts begging for it a few days later.
