FAQs
and known bugs
FAQ 1: "Will
Whisper 32 work on WindowsXP?"
Version 1.12 has a problem with WindowsXP visual styles. It draws its
own title bar, which interferes with WindowsXP's notion of where title
bar buttons should be located. Because of this, these buttons behave
oddly. You can disable visual themes for whisper.exe, but that makes
Whisper kind of ugly. If you are using WindowsXP, you should download
the latest version above.
FAQ 2: "Will the latest version work on anything besides WindowsXP?"
I don't know, because I don't have any non-WinXP machines to test it
on. It should, but if you aren't feeling lucky, download the old version
above.
FAQ 3: "I forgot my password, can you open the file for me?"
Sorry, no.
FAQ 4: "This version is old. When are you going to update it?"
I have no immediate plans to update it, and I don't really have a mechanism
for telling you when I do, so keep checking back.
FAQ 5: "What encryption algorithm does Whisper use?"
From the program credits: "The encryption algorithm used in this
program is Karn (MDC) encryption -- Based on 'Phil Karn, sci.crypt,
13 Feb 1992' which is in turn derived from the RSA Data Security, Inc.
MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm."
FAQ 6: "How secure is Whisper?"
If you don't want the Mafia to find the number to the Swiss Bank Account
in which you store the money you stole from them, don't store it in
Whisper 32. Jokes aside, Whisper is meant to keep the average fairly
honest person out of your passwords, but not the NSA or FBI. If you
are looking for that kind of security, look elsewhere.
FAQ 7: "Are you going to do a version that works on WindowsCE devices?"
I'd like to, but I don't have time at the moment.
FAQ 8: "Are you going to do a version that works on PalmOS?"
Not bloody likely :)
FAQ 9: "Can I have the source code?"
No.
