Briefcase – Windows

If you need to take work home or on the road, Window's Briefcase is a great option. Not only does it make it easy to transfer multiple documents to a floppy disc or laptop, the Briefcase also allows you to quickly update files when you return to your desk.

To begin, you need to open <My Briefcase>. It appears as a little folder on your desktop.

Use the left mouse button and double-click <My Briefcase> to open it.

Once you've opened <My Briefcase>, you need to create a new briefcase file in which to put your work.

Single-click on the <File> menu, and select <New>.

When the side menu opens, single-click on <Briefcase>.

A <New Briefcase> folder will appear in your <My Briefcase> window. Its name will be highlighted, allowing you to type in the name you want to give it.

Press <Enter> to finalize the new name. Then double-click the <New Briefcase> to open it.

Fill your briefcase with the documents you want to work on. There are a number of ways to transfer documents from one folder to the other-detailing all of them is a tip in itself. I personally favour <Copying> and <Pasting>.

Just open the folder where the original document is, right-click the document and select <Copy> from the pop-up menu that opens.

Go back to your <New Briefcase> folder, right-click anywhere on the window, and select <Paste> from the pop-up window.

Once you've added the documents to your <New Briefcase> folder (or whatever you decided to call it), you can transfer the folder to a floppy disc or laptop.

To transfer the folder to disc, insert the floppy disc and then right-click the <New Briefcase>.

In the pop-up menu, hover the mouse pointer over <Send To>.

A side menu will open. Single-click on <3½ Floppy>.

The <New Briefcase> will move from <My Briefcase> to the disc. You can now take the disc and work on the documents elsewhere.

When you return to your main computer, open the floppy disc, and double-click on the disc version of the <New Briefcase> to open it.

Now single-click the <Update All> button.

The <Update New Briefcase> window opens. You'll see a list of any documents in the folder that have been altered.

Single-click on one, and then click on <Update>.

Windows will update the original document, wherever it is on your computer, adding the changes you made while working on the version stored in the <New Briefcase> folder.

Repeat this for any documents you wish to update.
